Born on the southern tip of Africa, he has been playing guitar for almost 35 years. His interest really took off when he was 15 on a warm day. The long distance sounds from somewhere in the American south of Howlin' Wolf on Highway 49 beamed into the living room.
Guy Collins is a guitarist, singer, songwriter and instrumentalist drawing on African Roots, Zulu Maskandi, Malian Desert Blues, New Orleans Funk, Cape Goema, Southern Gospel, Roots Reggae, Rock ‘n Roll and Mississippi Hill Country Blues. He counts Jimi Hendrix, Ali Farka Toure, Bob Dylan, RL Burnside, Mississippi Fred Macdowell, Busi Mhlongo, Mfaz’ Omnyama, Johnny Cash and Bob Marley as influences on his musical direction. He is a relaxed and dynamic performer, equally at home in intimate settings and on festival stages.
He started out in 1995 during the grunge explosion in the little student town of Stellenbosch, South Africa. The band, Billygoat, were the antithesis of grunge, an improvisational blues rock band drawing on influences from the late 60's and 70's such as Jimi Hendrix & The Allman Brothers. The band became a cult band in their hometown and at festivals in SA.
Most recent projects include his own raw blues duo, . South African fusion band, Donovan Copley's Hot Water. As a member of and The Deadmen. A band fusing Zulu maskandi with roots rock - @TheRockskandiKings. His latest endeavour is to finish and release all those half finished songs begging to be released.
