The Schwa
The Schwa
Schwa: noun /SHwä/ [phonetics] the unstressed central vowel "uh" (as in 'uh' moment 'uh' go), represented by the symbol /ə/ in the International Phonetic Alphabet.
Combining speedy guitar riffs with retro pop hooks, The Schwa delivers high-energy, overdriven power pop with modern production and an old-school feel.
Based in Greenville, SC, the Schwa consists of Eric Intile on guitar and vocals, and Cooper Phillips on drums. The two started making music together in 2015 primarily as a way to hang out after high school. Now, ten years, a couple of relocations, and a few lineup changes later, the Schwa returns to their roots as a two-piece.
When the two first met as middle schoolers in 2012, they introduced each other to their favorite bands: The Beatles and Van Halen, two influences that can be heard in their music today. Intile’s arena rock guitar and nasally baritone combined with Phillips’ simplistic but heavy drumming bring a unique sound reminiscent of Oasis, The Black Keys, Franz Ferdinand, and The Hives.
While they keep their music upbeat and fun, their lyrics tackle complex subjects relating to the world and people around them in South Carolina. Through heavy guitar tones and pounding kick drums, they show that the South still got something to say.
